YAG Iridotomy

YAG iridotomy is a specialized laser treatment that is used to preserve vision and prevent glaucoma from occurring or progressing. It is often recommended for patients who may have closed-angle glaucoma (also commonly called angle-closure glaucoma or narrow angle glaucoma).

During this procedure, the laser is used to create a healthy hole in the outer edge of the iris. This hole creates an opening in the closed or narrowed angle, therefore allowing fluid outflow and lowering pressure in the eye (intraocular pressure).

What to Expect

YAG iridotomy is a safe, outpatient procedure that can be performed by your ophthalmologist or glaucoma specialist. While your appointment may be 1-2 hours, the procedure itself usually takes less than 15 minutes. Because dilating drops may be used during the procedure, it’s recommended to arrange for a ride home from the procedure.
